Santa Tereza by Kareem R. Muhammad
She walks in Santa Tereza with sunglasses, beach bag and sandals.
Her jeans cuffed to her ankles receiving the Rio breeze.
She walks in Santa Tereza confident and aware of her surroundings.
She stops at a corner loja to buy a bottle of agua mineral that quenches her thirst from the hot Rio sun.
She walks in Santa Tereza as the vibrant colors of the buildings and homes reflect off her bronze skin,
Stopping to hold this memory to get her past the long and cold days in the United States.
She walks in Santa Tereza down long winding streets that holds mysteries behind ever corner.
She walks in Santa Tereza only to stop to catch the bondinho to a higher altitude in order to overlook the beaches of Flamengo, Botofogo and Coppacabana,
Feeling her bare feet press against the sand and watching the waves crash.
She walks in Santa Tereza holding memories of her youth.
So young, so beautiful the girl that walks in Santa Tereza.
